Research and planning- Questionnaire chart review

As you can see we have more females who did our questionnaire compared to males.
Here we got more in the 16-18 category for the questionnaire and none for 19 plus.
we have more close ups that people have chosen and then its mid shots, so we're thinking to use a lot of close ups to make it realistic.
Here we got the same amount for expansion of time and ellipses of time
For sound we got more people who ticked digetic rather than non-digetic.
And here most people want low key lighting rather than high key, so it looks like we are going to use mostly low key lighting.

These are my six chart reviews that I have done for age, gender, cinematography, editing, sound and mise-en-scene from the questionnaires that we gave out to people to fill in.

Research and planning- IDMB

From this list of horror genre films I think is like 'House at the end of the street' because it has some similarities like murdering and moving into a place, whereas for us it's moving into a park.

Research and planning- Audience theories

The 'hypodermic' model-
The hypodermic model is a model of communications suggesting that an intended message is directly received and accepted by the receiver. The model is rooted in 1930's behaviorism and is largely considered obsolete today. These are the messages that we listen to and accept.

The cultivation theory-
This examines the long term effects of television.
This explains that the more people watch television the more its like there living in the TV world, this is more likely that the people believe social reality portrayed on TV.

Desensitisation theory-
This is when instead of copying we select the things we like such as messages or a part of the film that we like. Then we get use to it and we never get shocked.

Modelling or the Copy cat theory-
The copy cat theory is when people tend to copy what they see like children who watch films or play games, they often copy things that they are not suppose to.

Uses and gratifications theory-
The audience take in what they need and reject the ones that they dont need.

Research and planning- Meeting with my partner

I had a meeting with my partner to discuss which part of media language we are going to share out to each other. We have decided that I will be taking cinematography and editing and my partner will be taking Mise-en-scene and sound.
We have also decided about our location that we are going to do it outside of college in Hyde Park near to college as this place is perfect to be filming as it is mostly dark. Also we both like horror genre so we've decided to do horror genre trailer.

Research and planning- Trailer analysis two

Genre:
The genre of this trailer is horror. I can tell this because of the fast paced montage used to create tension and the recognisable styles that draws an existing audience as Andrew Sarris said, all the blood faces of people at the end of the trailer, the house that looks creepy and the voiceover and titles giving us information of what goes on. This genre is a repetition with an underlying pattern of variations which was said by Steve Neale, it has some similarities and also differences from the first trailer that I did which was 'Silent Hill'. Christine is the main character and she is the one who gets terrorised right till the end. The main media language used on this trailer is sound, there is a voice over of hers throughout the trailer and dialogue by other people and sometimes hers too. Theres quite a lot of editing like fade in  and fade out, wipes and straight cuts. The shots are clear to see like the close ups, wide shots, mid shots that are used in the trailer to make it realistic and eye catching to see for the audiences.

Representation:
Just like 'Silent Hill' we see a women saving every body on this trailer who is Christine Taylor, shes almost like a hero as Propp says and its a protagonist as she is the main character. The representation here is about women being represented as being stronger than men and they save lives. However, we mostly see men doing all the saving instead of women, men are to be the strongest and meant to be the heros. Police officers are meant to be trusted and so are the doctors and operation people, but here it is represented that the police and the surgery people cant be trusted, here they are stereotyping that public services cant be trusted.
Narrative:
The story starts of with an accident were the man that she is with, gets taken to hospital, were he gets terrorised by the surgery people but Christine goes to save him, but she also gets put there as we see her at the beginning were she is being pushed by the nurses and shes getting a surgery done when she is wide awake. There's not many binary opposites here like Levi Strauss and Roland Barthes theory but we see some light and mostly dark to create intimidation of the audience, we see the weather as dark, rainy and cold to identify the suspence being created to make it realistic and dramatic.

Audience:
The target audience for this is young adults as you mostly see young adults in the film trailer therefore its suitable for teenagers. I can tell this because of the age that these characters are also to be able to see the film you dont need to be female or male anyone can come and see. They must have an interest in seeing the horror film, they will have an educational background as a doctor or nurse or even a police officer, they can watch it too. By watching the film the target audience can get different meanings from the text which is called the reception theory.

Media language:
There are so many media languages used here from the cinematography, editing, sound and mise-en-scene to make the film trailer attractive and eye catching to watch also to make it realistic and dramtic for the target audience.

Cinematography:
The shots that we see on the film trailer are closeups, Birds eye view of the surgery room where she is lying down, worms eye view were Christine is looking up at the nurse who is about to do surgery on her, wide shot of the two cars crashing into each other and theres always mid shots and over the shoulder shots to show the feeling of the  people.

Editing:
The editing of this trailer is fast which is a montage as Kuleshov method explains it as and there are alot of other editing like straight cuts, fades when she is getting moved to her surgery room and also there is voice over of hers. There are alot of jump cuts that take us to different part of the film trailer creating shock. and lastly theres a wipe when she sees the intimidating face of the police officer looking at her.

Sound:
The sound used in this film trailer is really intimidating as it uses this sound that follows what she does, its fast when there in danger and when its not then theres slow tension music to create suspence. The trailer is interesting because of the voice over of her teeling us what is happening to her and the title to give us a clear understanding of what is happening.

Mise-en-scene:
The trailer shows the police officers and the surgery people dressed in the right uniform. However, we dont see the ambulance man dressed in his uniform instead he wears casual clothing which is different because we now get people with uniform to show that they are part of public service groups.
The facial expressions give us an idea of how the people are feeling, the shock from Christines face, the attitude from the police women and the nurse who gets ready for the surgery on Christine. the trailer only shows low key lighting to play on the audiences fear and to intimidate them as this is what a horror genre intends to do.

Research and planning- Trailer analysis feedback

This is a screen grab (control, shift, 4) of the feedback that I got from Facebook to which trailer I should use for my analysis and I got quite a lot of replies back, but then I had one of my own trailer that I thought of so I used that instead because I thought it would be easier for me to do that one, than the others because some of them I have not watched yet.

Research and planning- Trailer analysis one

Genre:
This silent hill trailer is a horror genre trailer. I can tell this because of the fast sounds that build tension also the jump cuts to different scenes makes me think that this is a horror trailer. Also the things that we associate with horror like the blood, darkness and the screaming sounds. On this trailer there are also intimidating faces like the women she goes to for her father, and the little girl that walks slowly from the tornado. The media language here like the fast pace editing, the close up of the faces to show facial expressions the wide shots to build tension and fear and show whats coming. In this trailer all we see is the girl she is the main character as she has most shots of her we know this as Carol Glover has said the final girl will be terrorised throughout the film, on this trailer we see that she still survives even till the end because its her nightmares and her dad gets taken away from her first.

Representation:
This film is from a female point of view as she is the main character and we see her throughout the film. Here the women is being stereotyped as being the strongest as she saves all the people but we mostly see that mens do the saving as mens have the power to do this. On this film her friend disappears and her dad too but then she goes and saves them so we see her right till the end.

Narrative:
The story is about Heather Mason who faces her nightmares since childhood until when she finds out her father and her friend disappears she finds herself in a strange and alternate reality that holds answers to her nightmares. In the film trailer we see the binary opposites which is said by Levi Strauss and Roland Barthes the opposites like when she is in the good mood we see that the atmosphere is light and when its her bad moments we only see darkness known as low key lighting. Heather Mason seems to be the hero throughout the film we see this in most shots in the film and trailer this is to identify that she is the main character in the whole film, this is one of Propp's theory where he talks aboput character types in our case she is the hero and final girl till the end of the film.

Audience:
By watching the film I think that the audience dont need to be passive or active as the certificate for this film is TBC which is known as to be confirmed because the BBFC have not confirmed what the age should be as its not all scary but its known as a horror genre. For this film I think it can be for any gender also at the teenager age any one can watch this but if twelve they may have to be accompanied by an adult. The audiences lifestyle can be a student in a school as we see Heather Mason in the school corridors so we get told she has been to 5 different schools since she was eleven. I think we also get a bit of reception theory in this film because if she has been to five different school we can assume that she has a bad behaviour or some sort of problem that does not allow her to stay in school, we are getting different meanings from the film by listening to voices.

Media language:
On this film trailer we see quite alot of media language such as the cinematography shots and pace, the editing of the film, the mise-en-scene, dressing, facial expressions and lighting and lastly the sounds that we get from the film trailer.

Cinematography-
On this film trailer I saw alot close up shots of the main character this is to show that Heather Mason is the main character in this film, we see how she feels throughout. We also get wide shots like when the small women comes walking infront of the tornado also when we see the wall where it says 'come to silent hill'. Moreover there were alot of fast pace editing as Kuleshov method said its the montage, the fast pace editing in the trailer is used to create tension and make it dramatic. Also on the trailer there was low angles, zooming technique used and camera tracing the people.

Editing-
Like before the editing of this film trailer is a montage because of the fast pace editing. Not only this but at the begining of the trailer there is a lot of jump cuts which shows part of the film. But mostly ther are alot of straight cuts that are visible on screen but we cant really see them. theres dissolve and mostly fade out blacks on the trailer.

Mise-en-scene-
The facial expressions used on this are to show the intimidation of the people and to create tension of the audience and the facial expressions are shown with close up of the face. Moreover, the lightings are used like dark to demonstrate fear which is called low key lighting also high key lighting for the times when she is with the guy and also sometimes with her dad and when in school.

Sound-
The dialogue used by Heather Mason is throughout the film trailer also to potray that she is the main character. The trailer uses calm, gentle music when she talks about herself and her dad and the boy Vincent, but when it comes to the monsters and the ghosts it's loud and fast paced to make it realistic, dramatic and to create tension for the whole film and trailer.

Research and planning- Photoshop challenge

This task was set by my teacher. The task was to create a film poster in Photoshop and see what we remember from using Photoshop from last year. There are some things that I still remember from last year. The things that I have done here are:
  • Firstly I added a background, I did this by going on the internet and getting a picture that is related to my genre of the film, in this case its a picture of a haunted house, something scary. With this picture I went on Photoshop and pasted it on a new page by clicking on the edit tab on the screen.
  • The next thing I did was added the masthead on the film poster, here I have changed the font size and color, so its bigger than all the other texts and it looks like a masthead. I did this by going on the 'T' tab on the left column, this is to add text and to add color I went on top of the page on the color tab and changed the color
  • After that I added the certificate of 12A to show that children must be accompanied by an adult, I did this the way I pasted the background and to size the image I used 'control T' on the keyboard. This was done the same way as the universal studio image on the left, bottom corner.
  • The text on the left (cast crew) and the text at bottom (the comment) is in the font steel tongs from a website. This is going to be used in the real film poster that we are going to create and this font is used a lot in film posters. This font was uploaded on to the font list and you just click on it and then type the text you want.
  • I set the cinema date near to Halloween because this would be even better as people will enjoy the film even more as it will be a good movie to watch at the time of Halloween, but they must make sure they are accompanied by an adult, this is why I have the 12A certificate on the film poster that I have created.

Research and planning- Regulation and censorship

This is the 15 certificate for our horror genre film. We have set it as 15 to watch in the cinema because there may be some disturbing images that people might like to watch so we've kept them for the cinema instead of the trailer as some parents will think of the copy cat theory. there may also be some violent scenes and also some bad, strong language. This certificate aslo means that children under the age of 15 are not suitable to come and watch the film, not just the film but the videogames that are also rated at the age of 15.

This 12A certificate symbol is to identify people that when children go to watch films they must be accompanied by an adult or someone who is 18 an over who is also watching the film. They must be accompanied by an adult as the dark setting tone can be disturbing to them which may have some affect on the children. We have set it as a 12A for the trailer because, there may not be many disturbing images on the trailor but there might be in the film. We put it as 12A so many people can see the trailor and think its a good film to watch and the fact that children who come to watch it will be accompanied by an adult, as some adults think of the copy cat theory, where their children tend to copy what they see whether a film or videogame.

Research and planning- The test

About clip - This full two minute clip is about THE CHASE.  It is about me loosing my ticket and a person finds it and goes after me to give it, but before that he goes to the wrong person so we both go after that man and get the ticket off him.

Cinematography -  In this clip we have added quite a lot of different shots, such as a closeup when I go walking down the stairs, when just after that I  drop my bus ticket. a close up when the ticket is falling in slow motion also when I open the door, we've also had a couple of mid shots and shots looking from a low angle.

Editing - The clip uses some editing such as the expansion of time to make it dramatic and to put effect on the clip, we also have at the end fade to white, just to show that the chase clip is about to end, also we have one in the middle of the clip to show the slow motion of the ticket.

Mise-en-scene - The clothing and props are normal as it is a clip created in college. we just used a bus ticket to make it realistic. The facial expressions I thought were OK but they made need some improvements because when it was a time to show a feeling of anger we actually had smiles on our faces, but some bits were good such when Sam was looking down at the ticket on the floor he seems to be confused, so this bit was really good. Also the there was no contact between me and Sam going up and down the stairs to show realism that we didn't know who's ticket it was.

Sound - We could make some improvements on the sound of the clip such as the musics that were used, as it didn't quite go with the clip such as the owl sound and the whale sound in different feelings being used in the clip.

Improvements - The improvements that could be made is to extend the clip a bit more as the clip isn't exactly two minutes, which is a bit too short. we could have added a bit more animation if we extended the clip, use some good facial expressions to make it realistic and catchy. the recording wasn't as brilliant but if we had used the tri-pod we could have better filming to make it dramatic.

Good and bad points -  The good points are that we worked really well together, helped each other to use the camera and how to record and things, we used a bus ticket to show the realism of the clip. the bad points are not using the correct feelings to make it look good and not good with the filming either.
